First blog Entry

Topic: All about myself

I have started this blog for a class I am taking at Wells College that is aimed at integrating technology into the classroom. Our fist task is to write all about ourselves.

Past:
My name is Jessica Sterling. When I was born my mother made a list of the names of all the other girls my father knew at the time and none of those could be my name. My dad choose Jessica because that name was not on the list and because it is an Allman Brothers song. My last name is made up, because my parents were not married and neither of them liked their respective last names. I spent my childhood with my great grandparents, because my mother was only 17 and my father was in a band. Eventually my father would take custody of me, and his life style heavily influences who I am today, as I am a night person and I was raised with the only fashion rule my father has: black goes with everything!
Present:
At my fathers house I am an only child. At my mothers I have three half siblings: a 15 year old sister, a 6 year old brother, and a 2 year old brother. I love my brothers to death and I wish I could be with them more often. They have fueled much of my desire to work in the field of developmental psychology. I also love to take photographs and they are two of my favorite subjects.
As for myself; I love the color black, and hate the color yellow. I love music and concerts but hate loud noises and raised voices. I am rather withdrawn and contemplative and reflective, but eventually if you are around enough I will talk a mile a minute. I am loyal to a fault. I love to play video games. I am a psychology major because I find people fascinating and their discrepancies even more so. I minored in secondary education because the teachers I had in high school were so influential in my life and in shaping who I have become today that I wanted to be able to do the same for others. However Wells wont certify me, so I will probably end up teaching at the collegiate level instead, but my I am glad that I have taken the education classes because it gives me a background that I feel so many professors should have but are lacking. My other minor is in Math because I absolutely love math and the finality of it. I like that there generally is a right answer, and that is the answer, unlike psychology.
Future:
I hope to go to Suny Brockport next year to get my masters degree in psychology. From there I hope to go either to Columbia or NYU to get my doctorate. I eventually would like to teach full time at the collegiate level. I look forward to the day I own my own home and can raise my own family.

  1. Hi Jess,

I haven't heard of the Allman Brother's song titled "Jessica" but it sounds like you are happy with your name. It has an interesting history.

I don't understand why Wells can't certify you in secondary ed. I thought we gave elementary and secondary ed certifications. Your plans to go to SUNY and then Columbia/NYU are excellent! Let us know how your applications fare.

    Good luck!

  2. Wells isn't able to certify the Psychology Major in Secondary Education, however does offer it for Elementary Education.

I had the same dilemma being a Psychology major and wanting to go into Secondary Education.

Btw Jess, I love your heart layout. :-)

  3. I love the way you got your name. A list of non-options and a "eh, let's have something cooler."

Gosh, I can't imagine juggling math, psych, and education. Good on you.

    Wow, this layout is awesome.

  4. First of all... What is Dita Von Kiss? It is so awesome that you made your own last name. It is very individual!

  5. Dita Von Kiss is my gamertag on Xbox live. It is like my nickname.
Also I didn't make up my last name my parents did. But it is kinda weird having a different last name then everyone else. My dad has kind of gone by Mr. Sterling since I started school because it tends to freak people out when we have different last names.

  6. Historical corrections: I was 18! :) and your last name is your father's middle name.... which was also legally my last name for awhile.... and it was a list of women he "knew" in the biblical sense.... and the non-embellished story goes like this: it took us three days of disagreement on names to come up with Jessica, because your father heard it on the radio on the way to visit, and liked the song. He had also heard the Rolling Stones Satisfaction..... he didn't suggest that as a name though :) lol.
